5 Principles Of Effective Logo Design For Small Businesses

5 April 2022

Working with small business owners for the past 5 years, it’s rare I’ve met a client not knowing the importance of a good logo design. That’s because a logo it’s the very first element of a brand image that always comes to mind. And the first manifestation of your brand in tangible form. Your logo is the carrier of your message, and therefore it contains your brand’s values, goals and target information. Everyone who has a computer, or even a pen and piece of paper, can draw a logo. However I bet most of you would never entrust the faith of their small business to chance! So what makes a great logo design? Here are 5 principles of effective logo design you should consider when creating your small business logo or working with a designer.

Unique

Your logo design should first and foremost represent your brand’s unique personality and what makes you different. It should communicate your message, story and values with every concept and style choice. An effective logo design should help you distinguish from your competitors and shine between the rest. That’s why I always recommend you carefully look for inspiration when creating a logo design, because your logo should be as unique and personal as possible.

Simple

Studies demonstrate most people remember logos that are fairly simple and essential. That being said, I’m aware as small business owners we don’t always want minimal logo designs. It’ fine! I believe our target is different and more specific than the ones of big multinationals, and it’s surely more alert when approaching our brand. Yet try and keep your logo as simple as possible, without limiting your creativity and message.

Magnetic

Your logo should be rich of a concept to discover, thought for your ideal clients to fall in love with. Creating a logo concept can be one of the most overwhelming and complex phases of branding, that’s why it’s always a good idea to work with a designer who can provide an objective point of view on your brand. Studying your brand and defining your target and goals will help you create a truly magnetic concept that will catch your ideal client’s eye without a doubt.

Coherent

Needless to say, everything in your logo design should be coherent with your brand’s message and goals. Your logo should be able to instantly communicate your message, but also silently sustain your goals as a business owner. Every style choice should be carefully considered in order to create an effective and strategic image.

Versatile

Last but not at least, your logo design should always be versatile. This means it won’t come in the form of just an image, but will be provided with several logo variations that will make your life easier when it comes to using your logo. An effective logo design will come in different colors, sizes and forms to give you variety throughout your brand collaterals.

Using these 5 principles of effective logo design your will be able to produce or commission an image that feels timeless and highly communicative if you’re just starting your new business. But why not using them to audit your current logo and find out it it’s truly making your brand justice? Is your logo working for you or against you?
